Mental Health

When listening to the speaker on mental health, I learned some things I did not know. For example, ways to help determine if someone is depressed and the mood changes that they will go through. The one thing that blew my mind was that Madison jumped off the top of the building to take her life. That’s so sad. Just shows that it could happen to anyone. I am going to apply this to my life by keeping the signs in minds and looking out for my friends that may put up a red flag.

The Illusionists

After watching this documentary, my view on advertisment and body image changed durastically. Its crazy how much influence advertising can portray in a negative way to younger children. It is shocking to me how much people drill beauty and body image into womens heads. They portray these features to be what makes you who you are. Things have, more than likely, changed for the worse since this documentary came out. Every negative thing on social media is increasing by the day. This wont necesarily effect my behavior on how I see things, but I definately won’t look at models as being natural since there is so much editing going on. I guess im one of the few that never knew you could change the appearance of one so much just through technology.

Adult Health and Fitness

I have a friend that, I would say, is overweight. She has always wanted to improve her health and she always complains that she “looks like a cow” but never takes the initiative to take a step in the right direction. She has never once asked me for advice on how to become healthier but if she were to ask me, I would tell her that she needs to stop trying not to eat to lose weight. She would drink a sugary coffee and feel like that could just replace her breakfast which is awful. I also tried to get her to go workout with me and she never would, but the other day, she called to tell me that she joined CrossFit. Being 20, I know its hard to stay healthy and find time between school and work to workout, but she has found time to start getting healthier and I’m proud of her.

Bite Size and Childhood Obesity

After watching the documentary, Bite Size, I learned how little the parents care about their children’s food choice and healthy habits. The children’s life’s are so dependent upon them selves. They have to make their own decisions to get up from playing a video game and go play outside. They have to make their own decisions about what they are going to eat. Some barriers that they face are just not wanting to make a change. Like the girl eating the watermelon, she knew it was wrong yet she didn’t want/know how to change it. I think some of the kids could have been more involved and had more social time with friends and kids their age to help with being more active and actually taking the initiative to get outside and play. This documentary made me realize how much the parents effect the child. They are putting them down more than lifting them up by telling them they need to be healthier, yet they aren’t changing anything about their lifestyles to help the kids out. I see childhood obesity as really sad.

Yoga & Foam Rolling

I’ve done yoga before and I love. It is calming when I can actually focus, which is sometimes hard to do. On the other hand, foam rolling is hard for me to do on my own but when I’m told to do it, I like it because I feel like it does help. It is just hard finding time to roll out after practice or classes. Both of these labs were positive and I learned a few new stretches for yoga and also rolling. I will continue to do them.

Muscular Endurance Test

I was not surprised by my results for the muscular endurance test, although I am having to take it really slow to sit and stand, because my legs are sore. I think I could’ve been a little better on the pull ups but that is about the only thing I struggled with. To help guide my fitness goals and plans, this test helped because I often forget how beneficial it was to do something as simple as we did. I usually lift weights and run but its the same boring stuff. Therefore, I will keep these little workouts in mind for the next time I need a bit of a change in routine!

Chicken and Rice

The healthy meal that I cooked is chicken and rice. I’ve always loved when my mom made this dish but I never actually cooked it myself. Its rich in protein from the chicken and also high in fiber from the rice. The one thing that this meal is poor in is veggies. Yes, there is some chopped white onion, celery, and bell pepper in it but that is not enough.

The first thing you’ll need is chopped onions, celery, green bell pepper, brown rice (or white), chicken, olive oil & chicken bouillon.

First thing to do is put one tablespoon of olive oil into your pan to brown your chicken. Once it is brown on both sides, take it out and set aside. Then you throw your chopped veggies (however many you want) into the pan that you cooked the chicken in, to sauté them. Pour 1 cup of rice in with your veggies and brown the rice also. You will need 2 cups of water with 1 tablespoon of chicken bouillon mixed in to pour into your pan next to soak up all of the flavor. You will then pour this into a Pyrex dish and lay your chicken on top.

Place tin foil over the top and then bake for about 45 minutes on 350. Check to make sure there is no liquid in the bottom of your dish.

This was very quick and easy to make and I enjoyed it. The meal was really good and I will be cooking it again!

side note: if your friends don’t like vegetables, you can do one half without (as pictured) 😉

Clif Bar

This is a Clif Bar, one of my favorite “in a hurry” breakfast foods. Some nutrients that it contains is organic rolled oats, and oat fiber. The top 4 ingredients of the bar is organic brown rice syrup, organic rolled oats, soy protein isolate, and organic cane syrup. One thing that I learned that I didn’t know is that almost all of the ingredients are actually organic. I would consider this bar very healthy even though sometimes we just look at/count calories. The calories per bar is 250 but there is 9g of protein. I feel like this is a good, on the go, breakfast!

Chapter 1 and the Sleepiness Test

After taking the sleepiness test, I discovered that I was alert. After listening to the chapter 1 lecture, one thing I learned that I didn’t know was that 75% of Americans don’t consume adequate fruits, vegetables, or dairy products. This fact caught me by surprise. I guess I just figured most everyone likes to eat fruits and vegetables like I do!
